Q: Do I need a membership to come climb at TRC?

Q: What if I've never climbed before, do I need to schedule a visit?

Answer: There’s no need to schedule an appointment to climb at TRC! Just be sure to check out our “FIRST TIME VISTIORS” page to learn all the ins and outs of climbing at our facilities! If you still have questions after that, we’d be happy to answer any of them via phone or email!

Q: How do I get belay checked at TRC?

Answer: Belaying is a critical part of the climbing system and one we teach in our Introduction to Climbing course! Not sure how to belay? Sign up for our Introduction to Climbing class and learn from one of our qualified instructors! If you already know how to belay, just come in and perform a belay check with a staff member. That will give you access to top roping within the gym. When you advance to Lead Climbing, you will need to participate in the Lead Climbing check. We will not charge for the administration of a belay or lead climbing check. To pass the TRC belay check, the belayer must demonstrate these skills (unassisted):

  • Correct fitting of the harness, waist belt, leg loops, doubling back and checking harness on the climber
  • Ability to tie in to the rope, using the Figure-8 follow through knot
  • Correct set up of belay device and locking carabineer
  • Correct belaying while maintaining control of the brake side of the rope at all times
  • Demonstrate the knowledge to catch an unannounced fall
  • If you do not pass the check, our staff will let you know what adjustments you need to make and encourage you to participate in a check upon your next visit. The minimum age for belaying is 12.

Q: What gear do I need?

Answer: If you are bouldering, all you need is a pair of climbing shoes and a chalk bag. If top-roping or lead climbing, you will need a climbing harness, climbing shoes, chalk bag, and a belay device with locking carabineer. You are welcome to bring your own gear, or you can rent any of these items from our front desk. For your convenience, we also stock a variety of these items in our Gear Shop for purchase.

Q: How old do I need to be to climb?

Answer: The minimum age is 4, and the child must fit securely in the child full body harness.

Q: Anything else I should know?

Answer: All participants must sign a liability release waiver. If participant is not yet 18, a parent or court-appointed legal guardian must fill out a minor’s waiver before being allowed to participate. E-sign a waiver now.
